So what is wrong with the Lutheran Church? from a Biblical Perspective

The Lutheran Church, although birthed in the fires of reformation, NEVER fully left behind the false Gospel of the Roman Catholic Church.  What was true of the Lutheran Church when it was first established is true of the Lutheran Church today, in spite of its current emphasis on evangelism and outward similarities to Evangelical churches.   This is because the Lutheran Church still uses Martin Luther’s catechism and acknowledges that it is an authoritative statement of what Lutherans believe.  This means that the Lutheran Church, from its inception to this present day, teaches a false Gospel.  Why do I  say that?  Am I personally against the Lutheran Church?  No, not at all.  This is not a personal, subjective issue, but an unbiased objective issue.  I am simply reporting facts, for which I will provide solid evidence, and which will speak for themselves.  The reason I do this is not to offend, anger, or hurt Lutherans.  I call these things to their attention because I care about them: I want them to come to the knowledge of the truth, so that they can be saved from their sins, so that they can go to heaven when they die.  If the gospel of the Lutheran Church were not a false gospel that leaves souls lost in sin, bound to Satan, and doomed to an eternity in hell, then I would surely stay silent.  But I am compelled to speak out against its doctrine, because its message of Salvation is false, being entirely without Scriptural merit or support, and, therefore, entirely without power to save the soul from eternal condemnation.

What is the Gospel? The Bible says that it is, “The power of God unto Salvation…” (Romans 1:16) Therefore, a church's "gospel" is what that church teaches about how people receive Salvation-how they are saved from  their sins and how they can get to heaven.

Evidence Against the Lutheran Church’s Gospel:
All evidence against the gospel of the Lutheran Church will be provided by using quotes from Luther’s Small Catechism.  If you would like to verify the quotes used in this article, you may do so by reading Luther’s Small Catechism online; Luther’s Small Catechism can be accessed by clicking here.

                                        About Luther’s Small Catechism:
"[It] was written by Martin Luther and published in 1529 for the training of children. Luther's Small Catechism reviews The Ten Commandments, The Apostles' Creed, The Lord's Prayer, Holy Baptism, The Office of the Keys, and The Sacrament of the Altar. It is included in the Lutheran Book of Concord as an authoritative statement of what Lutherans believe.

English translations are available on-line at Project Wittenberg and from the LCMS (an American Lutheran denomination) as well as at bookofconcord.org, or as books from Augsburg Publishing and Concordia Publishing House (ISBN 0-8066-4282-3, ISBN 0-570-01535-9) The Small Catechism is widely used today in Lutheran churches as part of youth education and Confirmation." The Lutheran Church’s False Gospel Examined:
False Teaching I: "Holy Communion" The Lutheran Church Teaches that a person receives forgiveness of sins through the Church’s Administration of the “SACRAMENT of Holy Communion” Evidence from Luther's Small Catechism:

"What blessing do we receive through this eating and drinking?
That is shown us by these words, 'Given and poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins.' Through these words we receive forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation in this sacrament. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation."

"How can eating and drinking do such great things?
It is certainly not the eating and drinking that does such things, but the words, "Given and poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. "These words are the main thing in this sacrament, along with the eating and drinking. And whoever believes these words has what they plainly say, the forgiveness of sins**."

                                        Examination of Luther’s Doctrine:
Luther's doctrine is very tricky: He is saying that you receive forgiveness of sins through the sacrament, by believing the words spoken during the sacrament.  He is saying that through the sacrament God pours out the forgiveness of sins. He is even more crafty that the Roman Catholic Church in his use of deceptive phraseology: One might almost be tempted to believe, based on Luther’s words about “believing,” that he is saying that a person is forgiven, or justified, by faith, or simple belief. Yet, the truth is revealed through examination of context: Luther is saying that your sins are forgiven IN the sacrament (“Through these words we receive forgiveness of sins, life and salvation IN THIS SACRAMENT”...“These words are the main thing IN THIS SACRAMENT...” emphasis added).  Your belief would, based on Luther’s statement, be  useless were it not for the sacrament itself.  Therefore, Luther does not really believe that it is your faith, your belief alone that is important, but the sacrament itself.  This theology is no different from that of the Roman Catholic Church, which states that you receive forgiveness of sins through the SACRAMENT of the EUCHARIST.  Same doctrine, different church.

                                        False Teaching I:
Bible Refutation of The Lutheran Church's Doctrine About Forgiveness of Sins Trough the “Sacrament of Holy Communion."  We can see, from Luther’s statements in his small catechism, that the Lutheran Church believes and teaches that a person receives forgiveness through the Sacrament. When we need the truth though, we cannot look to Luther’s Catechism, but to the Bible.  God has revealed His plan of Salvation through the Bible, not Luther’s Catechism.  Therefore, in order for Luther’s words to be considered  truly authoritative on Christian doctrine, they MUST conform to the truth of Scripture.  That is what we will examine here.

                                        Truth from the Bible:
The Bible does not use the words "Holy Communion” or “sacrament” when describing the supper Jesus ate with His disciples or the ordinance he instituted for the church.  The Bible uses the term, the Lord's supper to describe this church ordinance (1 Cor 11:20).  Nor does the Bible, in any way, state that we are saved from our sins through the Lord' s supper. The Bible tells us the purpose of the supper is simply to remember Jesus' sacrificial death on the cross:

For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come (1 Corinthians 11:26).

And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me (Luke 22:19, emphasis added).

Comparison of Luther’s Doctrine with Bible Doctrine:
The Bible tells us that the Lord’s supper is merely a symbol of what Jesus did for us on the cross; it is something that all true born again Christians are to partake of in remembrance of the price that Jesus paid for their sins when He died on the cross.  That meal has NO saving merit, in and of itself.  We know this because the Bible tells us that it is Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for us that has saving merit, and it is our faith in that sacrifice that saves us.  In order for the “sacrament” of the bread and wine to save, the “sacrament,” rather than Jesus death on the cross would have to actually be the sacrifice, or payment, for your sins.  Clearly it is Jesus death on the cross that is the payment for your sins; therefore, to place your faith in the “sacrament” is to trust in something other than the actual sacrificial payment for your sins.  Yet, only the actual sacrifice for your sins has the power to save.  You must trust in it alone to save you.  The Lutheran Church has redirected the faith of the sinner: It tells the sinner to place his/her faith in the sacrament of the Lutheran Church to save them from their sins, rather than the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on  the cross!  This is grave error.  By doing this, the Lutheran Church has attempted to usurp Christ’s position as Savior by providing their own means of salvation outside of Jesus’ sacrificial work on the cross.  According to the Lutheran Church, they have the power to save sinners through administration of the Sacrament.  According to the Bible, however, only God has the power to save sinners, through Jesus’ death on the cross.

                                        False Teaching II:
Confession in Church. The Lutheran Church teaches that the Lutheran Church has the power to forgive sins when you confess your sins TO THEM. Evidence from Luther's Small Catechism:

" What is the use of the Keys?

The use of the Keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to his church on earth, to forgive the sins of penitent sinners but to refuse forgiveness to the impenitent as long as they do not repent. Where is this written?

The holy Evangelist John writes in chapter 20, "Jesus breathed on his disciples and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

                                        "What is Confession?
Confession has two parts. The one is that we confess our sins; the other, that we receive absolution or forgiveness from the pastor as from God himself, not doubting but firmly believing that our sins are thus forgiven before God in heaven."

"How will the pastor assure a penitent sinner of forgiveness?
He will say, "By the authority of Christ, I forgive you your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen."

                                        Examination of Luther’s Doctrine:
Martin Luther is clearly stating that the LUTHERAN CHURCH has the power to forgive your sins (“that special power and right which Christ gave to his church...”).  That is quite a statement.  He cannot receive full credit for this doctrine, however, as he merely borrowed it from the Roman Catholic Church.  This is actually the same doctrine Martin Luther grew up hearing in the Roman Catholic Church; In reality, Luther never actually started a new church, he just gave it a slightly different face.

                                        False Teaching II.
Biblical Refutation of Lutheran Church's teaching about Confession.  Once again, we have seen the similarity between Luther’s doctrine and that of the Roman Catholic Church.  Yet, how does Luther’s doctrine compare with the Bible?

                                        Truth from the Bible:
God alone has the power to forgive sins, respecting the guilt we bare for our sins before God. The Bible says, “who can forgive sins but God only?” (Mark 2:7)  A mere human being may forgive the sins of another  human being with respect to the offence done to that individual, but NOT with respect to the offence and the guilt that person bears for his sin before God!  When we sin against one another, we are to forgive each other, but if we want to be cleansed of our sins before God, we MUST look to Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross, as the Bible specifically states: My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the propitiation 1for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world (I John 2:1-2).  Only Jesus bore the penalty for our sins before God, and only through faith in His sacrifice on the cross are our sins forgiven in the sight of God (Matt 20:28, Rom 3:24-26, Rom 5:8-11, 2 Cor 5:21, Gal 3:13, Eph 1:7, Eph 2:12-16, Eph 5:2, Col 1:14, Col 1:20-22, Heb 7:27, Heb 9:26, Heb 10:10, Heb 10:12, Heb 10:14, Heb 13:12, 1 Peter 1:2, 1 Peter 1:18-19, 1 Peter 2:24, 1 Peter 3:18, 1 John 2:1-2, 1 John 4:10)   In spite of the truth of God's Word, the Lutheran Church maintains that the Lutheran Church has the power to forgive our sins.  We have already examined the evidence of this in Luther's Small Catechism.

                                        False Teaching III:
Baptism Saves. Evidence from Luther's Small Catechism:

“What does Baptism do for us?
Baptism works forgiveness of sin, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare. What are these words and promises of God? Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Mark, "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."

How can water do such great things?
It is certainly not the water that does such things, but God's Word which is in and with the water, and faith which trusts this Word used with the water. For without God's Word the water is just plain water and not baptism. But with this Word it is baptism, that is, a gracious water of life and a washing of rebirth by the Holy Spirit.

                                        Where is this written?
St. Paul says in Titus, chapter 3, "God saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying."

                                        Luther’s Doctrine Examined:
Martin Luther, and thus the Lutheran Church, believes that the waters of baptism become a vehicle for salvation through the WORDS that are spoken by the priest (“God’s Word which is IN and WITH the water”... “With this Word it is baptism (the waters are transformed into something powerful which can save), that is, a gracious water of life and a washing of rebirth of the Holy Spirit.  Martin Luther again employs faith, but not as it is used in the Bible; for he directs the person’s faith towards the “word used with the WATER.”  In doing so, Luther directs the individual to place his/her faith in the Waters of Baptism and the Words spoken by the priest during the rite of baptism for the work of salvation.  What does Luther say you will receive through baptism (through this gracious water of life and washing of rebirth)?  He says that you will receive forgiveness of sins, deliverance from death and the devil and eternal salvation! Again, Martin Luther cannot take full credit for this doctrine; he is merely regurgitating the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church on this subject, albeit in his own words and in his own personal style.  Yet, the meaning is the same: Baptism can save your soul.

                                        False Teaching III:
Biblical Refutation of the Lutheran Church's False Teaching that Baptism Saves. Again, we must examine Luther’s doctrine in light of the Scriptures:

                                        Truth from the Bible:
The Bible tells us exactly how we are delivered from Satan and his power:  “Giving thanks unto the Father…Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins. Who gave himself for our sins that he might deliver us from this present evil world…(Col 1:13-14). The Bible says that it is through the blood of Jesus Christ alone that we have redemption, that we are delivered from "the power of darkness," from Satan and his entire dark host.  The above passages also clearly states that we have forgiveness of sins through Jesus' blood.  Yet, as before, we saw that the Lutheran Church did not direct us to Jesus Christ and His work of redemption for forgiveness of sins.  It turns us to a mere outward symbol, a representation in the flesh of what takes places in the spirit during genuine salvation.  The Lutheran Church takes the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ and our salvation through faith in His blood, and replaced it with baptism.

Comparison of Luther’s Doctrine with the Bible:
The Bible says that there is only ONE faith (There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all who is above all, and through all, and in you all (Ephesians 4:4-7, emphasis added).  The question is, which faith will you believe?  The true faith taught in the Bible or the false faith of the Lutheran Church?

The True Faith of the Bible Summarized:
                                        1) Salvation is provided by God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.
                                        2) Salvation is through repentance and faith in Christ's sacrifice as full and complete payment for our sins, with nothing else required.
                                        3) Salvation happens one time and results in a new birth.  Everyone who has been saved was lost before they were saved; Before getting saved, they knew that they were lost and heading to hell.

The False Faith of the Lutheran Church Summarized:
                                        1) You are lost as an infant before you are baptized in the Lutheran Church.  Through baptism you get saved and become a Christian and a member of the church.
                                        2) Forgiveness of sins is not through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ alone, but can be received through the sacrament of "Holy Communion and "Confession."

Please believe the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, which He has revealed to you in the Bible.  The gospel of the Lutheran Church is contrary to the Gospel of the Bible and cannot be reconciled with its truth. Please don’t place your faith in its false gospel.
